Every year since 2008, the 5/8 Club has concluded the school year the same way: hiking to Dripping Rock off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, eating a picnic dinner, and making s’mores while watching the sun set over the Shenandoah Valley. At the sunset’s peak, we take a group photo to commemorate the year we’ve spent together and the friendships and memories we’ve made. Of all the field trips we go on throughout the year (snow tubing, bowling, UVA football and basketball games), the boys consistently rank this as their favorite, which is ironic because it’s also the cheapest. It’s just hard to beat bonding times while enjoying food and God’s beautiful creation, especially for kids who don’t leave their hometown much. What a privilege it is to give a child such a wonderful memory.
